Penrose Fire - Smoke Warning Lifted

Fire and Emergency's advisory for residents of Onehunga, Mangere Bridge and Favona to keep their windows shut and to stay indoors has now been lifted.

The warning was put in place after a fire at an industrial building in Penrose this morning. Fire and Emergency was alerted to the well involved industrial building fire in Neilson St, Penrose at 01:55am. The fire has now been contained.

The fire created a potentially toxic smoke plume, which was carried by the wind over the above suburbs, but has now dissipated. This was a fourth alarm fire, but has since been scaled back to second alarm.

At its peak, there were 20 fire appliances and more than 100 firefighters involved in containing and extinguishing the fire. Currently, four fire trucks remain in attendance, with about 25 firefighters still on the scene.

Incident Controller Brad Mosby said firefighters had done well to control the fire, but advised caution due to the potentially toxic smoke plume.

"Our firefighters did a really good job to contain the fire spread in the building."

This will be the final update for the Penrose fire.
