Youth Week in full swing

Published: Thu 23 May 2019 09:59 AM
Youth Week is more than half way through and there’s more to come in Hastings ahead of the big finale event this Sunday, May 26.
On the official Youth Week website Hastings was reported to have the most events happening in the country, all organised by the Hastings District Youth Council, and ranging from sporting to creative activities.
Kicking off on May 17 with a Gumboot Hunt and open air concert in Hastings, the fun has continued with the likes of a Skate and Scooter competition, Cosplay event and basketball competition.
Still to come is a youth art symposium, movie night and further basketball and skate and scooter events.
The finale on Sunday will be a Sports Crazy Day, where people are encouraged to grab their sneakers, sweat bands and mates for a day of crazy non-competitive sports.
A big drawcard is the 36 metre inflatable obstacle course – one of the biggest in New Zealand. This, however, is not suitable for toddlers so the event is aimed at 12 to 25-year-olds.
There will be giveaways on the day and prizes for the best dressed teams. Starting at 11am at the Hawke’s Bay Regional Sports Park the fun will continue until 3pm.
While the week provides a lot of fun activities for young people to get involved in, it comes with a serious message – “We are more than you see”, or “He wai hōhonu a mātou” (we are deep waters, referring to unseen depths).
This ties in with the Hastings District Youth Council’s focus this year on mental health issues affecting young people and finding solutions.
