Awatere Community Memorial Hall gets revamp

Seddon’s Awatere Community Memorial Hall is set for a revamp so it can once again become a multi-use community hub, fit-for-purpose and available for all community groups.
Having served the Awatere East Coast community well for nearly 40 years, the Community Memorial Hall was looking a bit worse for wear. Successive earthquakes in 2013 and 2016 saw areas of the hall closed off for use, and it failed to meet the building code required of a modern public building.
Its new renovation has come about after extensive community consultation, facilitated by the Council.
Councillor Cynthia Brooks has long championed the hall’s revival.
"It was a thrill to be able to see the building work now nearing completion. Kudos to the locals who led the consultation and design process, and to Council staff who employed the architects and have supervised the build,” she says.
“A lot of heart has gone into many new features and it shows. Scott Construction’s Duncan Gardiner has gone the extra mile to produce a quality result. I was blown away by the extra spaces created both indoors and out, and how functional the building will be for all to use and enjoy.”
“It is now in the hands of the local community to plan and fund the fit-out and I wish them well in this endeavour."
The build is expected to be completed by July and an official opening will be planned when the fit-out is finished. The Council allocated $3M for the upgrade.
