Wellington Civic Trust support revamp of Wellington’s transport network
The Wellington Civic Trust today welcomed the support from central Government for a transport plan for Wellington includes funding for a rapid transit system from Wellington Railway Station through Newtown and to the airport.
“The councils should prioritise better public transport over new infrastructure that encourages car use,” said Trust Board member Paul Bruce.
“The trust is urging Wellington City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council to ensure any transit system deliver land-use benefits, improve social connections and enhance public health and safety.
“People are seeking better choices and a regional integrated approach, with reduction of congestion through electrification of the bus fleet and a modern light rail rapid transit system along the spine route, together with a network of safe cycle ways and improved pedestrian facilities.”
