Tenby Powell to Run for Mayor of Tauranga
High Profile businessman, Tenby Powell, announced he is running for Mayor of his home-town Tauranga yesterday and called
for an immediate Town Hall debate of all Mayoral candidates.
“I’m calling for a Town Hall Debate of all Mayoral candidates immediately to ensure the people of Tauranga are exposed
to all candidates from the outset and are able to conduct their own public Due Diligence”.
“While this may seem early, the amount of calls, messages and emails I’m receiving from Tauranga residents is
overwhelming. The stories of pain and anguish are so disturbing that Tauranga ratepayers need and deserve to know who is
running and what leadership and management capability they have to mend a broken city with a broken heart”, says Powell.
Veteran Broadcaster, radio host and Tauranga resident, Peter Williams has agreed to Chair the debate which Powell hopes
will be picked up by local media in the form of a Series of Town Hall debates.
“I have been very encouraged by the sheer volume of approaches from Tauranga’s leaders across diverse communities
seeking my candidacy”, says Powell. “It will be my honour to serve the people of Tauranga, a key and rapidly growing New
Zealand city in desperate need of experienced leadership”.
Powell, who is married to equally high profile entrepreneur, Sharon Hunter, has extensive senior management and
governance experience in both the private and public sectors, currently serves on the APEC Business Advisory Council,
Chairs the government’s Small Business Council, and serves on the Governance Group of the Sector Workplace Engagement
Programme. Previously he led domestic and international businesses at CEO level and holds the rank of Colonel in the NZ
army.
Tauranga's local government elections will be held in October under a Single Transferrable Vote (STV) system.
