Upcoming roadworks
Three more jobs are to be completed on Riverside
Drive over the next couple of weeks.
Mackesy Road
This week (6-10 May) a footpath is being built on the northern side of the Riverside Drive, from Mackesy Road to Kissing Point. This will let Mackesy Road pedestrians cross Riverside Drive to get to the Shared Path or catch a bus into town, well clear of the new slip lanes designed to improve traffic flow at Mackesy Road.
The new footpath is being built during the day and median islands will be installed at night.
While Riverside Drive itself will be clear while this work takes place beside, but not on, the road, cones will still be needed to keep workers safe and drivers will slow down as they pass, and speed will still be restricted along this stretch of road until next week.
Riverside Drive Roundabout
Next week, starting at 9pm on Tuesday night (14 May) the city-side surface of the Riverside Drive roundabout will also be re-sealed. This will involve grinding off (milling) the sealed surface overnight, leaving the surface uneven throughout Wednesday, and re-sealing it between 9pm Wednesday and 5am Thursday. Overnight, traffic heading along Riverside Drive into and from town will be diverted through old Dump Station road. Dave Culham Drive traffic heading into town will be diverted along the old Dump Road, and traffic heading out to or in from Onerahi will be on stop/go control throughout the night.
Riverside at Town Basin
At the same time, from 9pm on Tuesday night (14 May) to 5am Monday (15 May), the seal on the other end of Riverside Drive from Victoria Bridge (at the Town Basin) to Ewing Street will be replaced. This will involve grinding off (milling) the sealed surface overnight, leaving the surface uneven throughout Wednesday, and re-sealing it between 9pm Wednesday and 5am Thursday.
Also:
Five Finger Roundabout
While this work is happening along Riverside Drive, another big re-sealing job will be under way at the Five Finger Roundabout, intersection of Walton and Bank Streets, Tarewa and Railway Roads.
Beginning at 6.30pm on Sunday 12 May and continuing to 5am on Monday 13 May, the surface of the roundabout will be milled, and it will be re-sealed between 6.30pm Monday night and Tuesday Morning, and again from 6.30pm Tuesday night to Wednesday morning.
This resealing work can be done at night because on these parts of the road Hotmix, which goes on hot and then cools, can be used. Chipseal, suitable for the 80k part of Riverside Drive, requires warm air and sunlight to cure so has to be done during the day.
More information, including maps, will be advertised on Council’s website and facebook as these works progress.
