The final Special Housing Area (SHA) application in Hamilton, a site on Quentin Dr near Hamilton Lake, has been recommended to Government by Hamilton City Council.

The application, by Quentin Residential Ltd (QRL), is an extension to an existing SHA application by the company previously recommended to Government and brings the total number of homes proposed for the combined site to 111.

The Council made the decision to recommend the application at this week’s Extraordinary Council Meeting. The resolution to recommend was amended following feedback during the public forum, including a requirement for QRL to work with Te Haa o te Whenua o Kirikiriroa to complete a cultural assessment prior to applying for a qualifying development consent.

The Government is repealing part of the legislation relating to SHAs, which means no further SHAs can be established after 16 September 2019, and 30 April 2019 was the final day the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development would accept applications.

The Council considered three other items at the meeting:

• confirming the representation arrangements for this year’s election would be unchanged, with six councillors to be elected from each of two Wards, the East and West, and a Mayor elected from across the city.
• Endorsing a proposed remit to Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) from Thames-Coromandel District Council regarding an amendment to the Camping Group Regulations, and
• Endorsing a proposed remit to LGNZ from Whakatane District Council to improve safety around road works through a review of the Code of Practice for temporary traffic management.
