Cold Front Déjà Vu But Colder Stronger Winds

The weather this weekend has similarities with a party mix lolly bag... There was a bit of everything!

A typical cold front proceeded up the country on Saturday and Sunday morning, bringing gusty winds, areas of heavy rain, a handful of thunderstorms and even some snow for the South Island mountain tops. Away from all that weather, sunny skies made for a rather fine setting.

With that front now on its journey east, MetService is forecasting a second round today and tomorrow, bound to bring some déjà vu.

“Another cold front is advancing up the country,” says MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes, “producing a very similar pattern of weather to the previous days’ weather; with periods of rain and thunderstorms affecting western areas.”

McInnes does go on to say “This front does differ from the previous front in that it brings a period of much colder and stronger southerly winds to southern and eastern parts of the South Island on Monday, with snow falling to 800 metres inland and gales about the east coast.”

MetService have issued several Severe Weather Warnings and Watches for heavy rain and strong wind, as well as Road Snow Warnings for several South Island high country roads. McInnes reminds people to “be informed and stay safe”.

Luckily, there’s a silver lining following this front. The southerlies ease quickly over central and southern New Zealand on Tuesday bringing a cooler sunnier week to most places, but showers do persist about Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay through to Friday
