Update on Hampton Downs Landfill Fire

Published: Tue 2 Apr 2019 02:24 PM
Fire and Emergency is continuing to make good progress on a deep-seated fire at the Hampton Downs landfill.
We still have our helicopters and ground crews working to take the heat out of the fire.
The landfill operator, meanwhile, is using heavy machinery to "cap" the fire with earth and clay - this will literally starve the fire of oxygen and smother it. It is likely this activity will go on for the rest of today and tomorrow.
As we make progress, the amount of smoke and steam produced by the fire should reduce. For the time being, we still recommend nearby residents stay indoors, and keep their windows and doors closed.
Any people will health concerns, particularly those with respiratory conditions, should consult their doctor.
Note: another update will be provided at about 5pm today.
