Update on Hampton Downs Landfill Fire

Fire and Emergency recommenced operations at the Hampton Downs Landfill fire ground at 7.30am today. Our crews are continuing to make good progress on the fire - there are 3 helicopters, 4 pump appliances, 1 rural 4WD, 3 tankers and 40 personnel working to contain the fire.

As our crews dampen down the flames, Envirowaste (operators of the landfill) is using multiple heavy machinery vehicles to cover the tip face with clay to extinguish the fire.

Overnight the wind has changed to a south-westerly direction, so smoke drift will impact different communities from the previous two days.

NIWA is currently mapping the smoke plume to provide accurate information about where and how far it will travel.

In the meantime, we recommend to residents nearby that they stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed to minimise disruption from the smoke and steam.
Note: a further update will be provided at around 1pm today.
