THE MEANING BEHIND THIS DESIGN
Ngāi Tahu master carver and artist Fayne Robinson has created an artwork for the National Remembrance Service based on
the mangōpare (hammerhead shark) symbol, which signifies unity, strength, courage and determination. Green represents
Islam, and also signifies pounamu (greenstone) which is found only in the South Island of Aotearoa. In the context of
the National Remembrance Service in Ōtautahi, the two mangōpare reflect our communities coming together as one.
We are one and we will be forever connected.
