Unity the focus of National Remembrance Service

Local and international artists, communities around New Zealand and across the world will come together on Friday for the National Remembrance Service for the victims of the Christchurch mosques terrorist attack, and all those affected by it.

The Remembrance Service, Ko Tātou, Tātou We Are One, will be held in North Hagley Park starting at 10am, jointly led by the city of Christchurch, the Government of New Zealand, Ngāi Tahu and the Muslim community.

The Remembrance Service will be broadcast at simultaneous events in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin and in regional towns throughout New Zealand, and live streamed for people to view worldwide.

Yusuf/Cat Stevens, Marlon Williams, Maisey Rika, Hollie Smith and Teeks are among the well-known artists who will take to the stage.

Hon Lianne Dalziel, Mayor of Christchurch, says Friday will be an opportunity for people across New Zealand and around the world to come together with their communities.

“The outpouring of love and support shown to our Muslim brothers and sisters has been heartfelt and has been received in the spirit in which it has been offered.

“It is in coming together as one, standing shoulder to shoulder, that gives expression to this unity and that’s what will see us through.”

Ūpoko of Ngāi Tūāhuriri Dr Te Maire Tau says the Remembrance Service is our opportunity to show the world that we are one community and that our identities are forever woven together.

“Ngāi Tūāhuriri and Ngāi Tahu have discovered a common identity and sharing of values with our Muslim community in the wake of this tragedy, and this has provided a resounding sense of unity that we can all find strength in,” Tau says.

About the logo
The logo for the National Remembrance Service (pictured above) was designed by Ngāi Tahu master carver and artist Fayne Robinson, who is based in Ōtautahi. The logo is centred on the mangōpare (hammerhead shark) symbol, which signifies unity, strength, courage and determination.
The green colour is traditionally associated with Islam, and it also signifies pounamu (greenstone) which is found only in the South Island of Aotearoa. In the context of the National Remembrance Service in Ōtautahi, the two mangōpare reflect our communities coming together as one.

Livestream
A livestream of the Service will be run on TVNZ Channel 1. People outside of New Zealand can watch via the 1 NEWS NOW livestream.

Christchurch event logistics

Please allow plenty of time to travel to the event, with large numbers expected to attend, and many roads around North Hagley Park closed to all traffic and pedestrians.

Maps showing the event site, entry points and road closures will be released as soon as possible.

As the National Remembrance Service is being held on a week day, parking in the central city will be extremely limited.

People wanting to attend are advised to take public transport, bike or scooter or park and walk in.

If possible, please avoid bringing bags to the event to avoid potential delays in getting into the event.

Regional events

A list of regional events is published on the Department of Internal Affairs website and will be updated regularly.
