Porirua Mayor Urges Support of National Remembrance Service

Porirua Mayor Mike Tana is urging people from his city to support Friday’s National Remembrance Service in Wellington.

“On the advice of Area Commander of Kapiti-Mana Police District Tracey Thompson, we can’t go ahead with a specific Porirua City event because Police resources are currently stretched too far to cover what could be quite a large gathering,” he said.

“But, Friday’s event gives another opportunity to get together and to pay our respects to those lost in the Christchurch tragedy, and so I’m urging everyone to really get behind this event and to come together in remembrance at the National Memorial”.

Porirua school children joined their regional counterparts at exactly the same time of one week past the tragedy to perform a simultaneous haka, last Friday, and there is a condolence book which can be signed at Pātaka Art + Museum.

Friday’s 10am event will be on at the same time as similar remembrance services in Christchurch, Dunedin and Auckland.
