St George Rugby League Club is full of praise about new floodlights recently installed at Cannons Creek Park.

“Previously, our juniors and seniors were training on the lower field, and it’s a small area that has dark edges to it,” club chairman Phil Marshall said.

“When I got the phone call the first time they came on [on the upper field], there was a real sense of excitement, so I had to drive there and see for myself. I saw them and went ‘wow’.

“These lights are one of the greatest things to happen to our club for a long while – it will make a huge difference to trainings for everyone across St George. We could even have night games there!”

Porirua City Parks Manager Olivia Dovey said the project was timed for completion before the end of daylight saving, and it came in on time and on budget.

“The floodlights are robust to stand up to the weather and designed to last,” she said.

“They will be a fantastic community asset, especially in winter.”

The floodlights use modern LED lighting technology to save energy, can be controlled remotely and incorporate security lighting back to the car park. They can be scheduled to switch on and off at different times.

Mr Marshall said St George’s juniors and seniors can now share the space after dark in winter, and the floodlights will serve to attract even more players to an already huge junior club set-up.

“We have the highest number of junior players in the [Wellington] region and these lights and good facilities make the kids feel valued, and can help to attract even more people to St George.”
