Two locations for two minutes silence for Christchurch


Hamiltonians can mark the two minutes silence for Christchurch terrorism attack victims today at today locations in the city – Civic Square, and Claudelands Park.

The two minutes silence, requested by the New Zealand Government following last Friday’s tragic events at two mosques in Christrchurch, will occur at 1.32pm.

Members of the public can congregate in Civic Square, outside the Hamilton City Council Municipal Building, from 1.25pm. A member of staff will announce the commencement of the two minutes silence. The Worley Pl shared zone from Caro St to Ward St will close from midday until Saturday morning, to allow for the two minutes silence and also the Balloons Over Waikato City Burn event in Garden Place this evening.

There will also be a road closure from 12pm to 3pm at Bandon St, the location of the Al Madeena mosque.

At Hamilton’s Jamia mosque on Heaphy Tce the two minutes silence will be preceded by the Muslim call to prayer. The public can gather in Claudelands Park, across the road from the mosque. To ensure safety of those wishing to attend, Heaphy Tce between Stanley St and the Boundary Rd-Heaphy Tce roundabout will be closed from 12pm to 3pm.

The Council’s Customer Services staff will be unavailable for a brief period while the two minutes silence is marked, and this includes those staff who answer customer calls.
