Have you got some bright ideas to make Palmerston North an arts powerhouse?
Palmerston North’s Creative Communities Scheme is searching for the next batch of arts-focused plans that will help make
the city more creative and exciting. Groups and individuals seeking to fund local arts and cultural projects are
encouraged to apply.
A partnership between Creative New Zealand and Palmerston North City Council, the scheme supports a wide range of arts
and cultural projects such as theatre, poetry, music, dance, Ngā toi Māori, Pacific arts, filmmaking, writing,
literature and crafts.
Previous funding recipients represent a string of successful arts projects. One of these is a photo exhibition featuring
images taken by people in wheelchairs. From Where I Sit is a project of The Seated Photographers, whose aim is to show a
view of life from their perspective. The funding they received from the Council’s Creative Communities Scheme was used
to premiere their exhibit in Palmerston North last year. They have since gone on to tour and showcased their exhibition
in other parts of New Zealand.
“The funding absolutely helped us fulfil our dream. It’s good for getting people with disabilities back into the arts
and Palmy is a fabulous place for that,” says Maureen Jensen, founder of The Seated Photographers. “Not only did we get
the funding but we also got the advice and the support.”
Debbie Duncan, General Manager – Community, says the funding scheme welcomes applications from Palmerston North’s
diverse communities.
“We want to support projects and activities that celebrate our culture, our communities, and our diversity. Anyone with
an idea to contribute to our city’s thriving arts and cultural scene should consider applying.”
Projects must meet at least one of three criteria:
• Access and participation – A project that will create opportunities for local communities to engage with and
participate in local arts activities.
•
• Diversity – A project that will support the diverse arts and cultural traditions of local communities.
•
• Young people – A project that will enable and encourage young people (under 18 years) to engage with and
participate in the arts.
