Raised median strip in Moerewa to improve safety

8 November 2018

Raised median strip in Moerewa to improve safety on State Highway 1

The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists in Northland of plans to install a raised median strip to improve safety at a State Highway 1 intersection at Moerewa, north of Kawakawa.

The raised median strip will prevent motorists driving straight across the state highway or turning right on to the highway, says the Transport Agency’s Northland System Manager Jacqui Hori-Hoult.

Drivers will only be able to turn left in and left out of Nisbet St and Wynyard Street.

“The local community has been consulted on this safety initiative and they support it. They want it to happen as the median strip is also expected to slow down vehicles travelling through Moerewa.”

Councillor Kelly Stratford from the Far North District Council says the median strip is a good safety win for Moerewa.

“Local community feedback supported the road narrowing and realignment as possible solutions for reducing cars racing around the Moerewa streets, and driving over speed limits along the state highway and side roads.”

Work will start on Monday 11 March and take about two weeks. There will be traffic management in place with a temporary speed limit to provide a safe work area for the construction crew.

The Transport Agency thanks motorists for their patience and understanding while this initiative to improve safety for the local community on SH1 is put in place.
