Mayor Gives Business Upbeat Update

Mayor Justin Lester gave an upbeat State of the City update to more than 120 Wellington Chamber of Commerce members this morning.

In a speech that ranged from the city’s economic progress, social housing stock, and infrastructure resilience, to attracting business to the city, transport, and arts and culture, he covered off the big issues that make Wellington tick, says Chamber Chief Executive John Milford.

"It’s fair to say this was an upbeat update from the Mayor. There was a lot of positive stuff about progress on the things people want to see happening, with an acknowledgment that there are big challenges ahead.

"We know there is progress just around the corner on some of our most pressing transport issues, a plan for the waterfront and the ferry terminals, and on some big new events for the city.

"We didn’t get a lot of detail because they’re still being worked through, but it’s clear we can look forward to significant announcements on some of these issues in coming weeks and months.

"The Let’s Get Wellington Moving announcement looks to be first off the block, and I’m sure everyone who drives or commutes or relies on an efficient transport system to move goods through and around the city will be looking forward to that," Mr Milford says.

"It can’t come soon enough."
