Work begins on Waipaoa Flood Control Scheme

Published: Tue 19 Feb 2019 09:11 AM
Work is now underway on the first phase of stopbank raising for the Waipaoa Flood Protection Scheme.
The work involves significant earthworks to upgrade 4km of stopbank along the Waiapoa River, south of the Ormond township between Ford and Ferry Roads.
“The existing stopbank on the eastern side of the river is being raised and widened to provide for climate change effects and to improve flood resilience,” said senior project engineer, Joss Ruifrok.
“The fill material required for the improvements is estimated at around 140,000m3. Soil material will be sourced from Council owned land that’s located on the riverside of the stopbanks.”
Work for the first phase is expected to be completed by November this year, with local contractors Earthwork Solutions working up to six days a week during the peak construction period.
Earthworks Solutions has invested more than $1million in hi tech plant and equipment for this project, to enable them to work smarter and more efficiently.
“It is a major investment for our company and demonstrates our commitment to this project. We are pleased to work on a project that is of huge significance to the community and we look forward to seeing it progress,” says Earthworks Solutions owner Matt Mead.
There may be minor temporary disruptions to residents and road users – we appreciate your patience while the work is being carried out.
