Forbury Road intersection improvements finalised
Dunedin (18 February, 2019) – Minor changes have been made to the plan for a roundabout at the intersection of Forbury,
Bay View and Allandale Roads in South Dunedin, following consultation with the community.
Dunedin City Council Transport Engineering and Road Safety Team Leader, Hjarne Poulsen, says the intersection has a high
crash rate, so the final plan for the roundabout and pedestrian crossing points aims to slow traffic and make the
intersection safer for all road users and people shopping in the area.
“Our figures show that from 2013 to 2018 there were 11 crashes at this intersection. This is a busy intersection with
several shops and a mixture of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, including lots of school children. So, we’re keen to
improve road safety.”
Changes to the original plan include moving the bus stops near the shops to further north and south along Forbury Road.
This will increase the current six car parks in the shopping area to 13 car parks and provide safer stops for the bus.
Moving the stops will result in the loss of three parks at both the new bus stop locations.
The pedestrian zebra crossing on Forbury Road will be removed and pedestrian crossing points with raised paving will be
installed on each of the four roads connecting to the intersection.
Fifteen power poles will be replaced by underground cables.
The roundabout will remain the same as the original plan. Its layout and shape will differ from ‘normal’ circular
roundabouts due to the layout of the side roads. It will have low concrete aprons allowing larger vehicles to turn
safely. The overall design, which includes plantings, will make the intersection more attractive. The roundabout design
has been successfully trialled with buses.
The work is expected to begin in September/October this year and should take up to six months to complete.
