A cooler end to a warm week

A cold front has moved away to the east of New Zealand today and is being followed by a ridge of high pressure, which will bring calm and settled conditions for most parts of the country into next week.

“The cold air in behind the front gave some respite from the sleepless muggy nights experienced by many people around Aotearoa” comments MetService meteorologist Mark Bowe.

It was a warm and dry week for most across the country with Valentines Day giving us some of the highest temperatures this week.

“Many stations across the country went above the 30°C mark, with Hanmer Springs reaching 34°C and Gisborne 33°C” adds Bowe. “People in Gisborne will have noticed the warmer weather as it was among the highest February temperatures on record going back nearly 30 years” confirms Bowe.

The warm temperatures took a dip towards the end of the week bringing some brief relief for many across the country, but temperatures should bounce back next week as the ridge moves firmly over the country.

“Generally settled and warm conditions will return next week with only the far north and south of the country seeing some wet weather”, Bowe adds.
