Renwick residents urged to conserve water
Renwick residents urged to conserve water - Marlborough District Council
4 February
2019
Renwick residents are being strongly
encouraged to conserve water.
Council’s Operations and Maintenance Engineer Stephen Rooney says the well level at the Renwick water supply bores continues to fall.
“Today’s bore water level is 1288 mm. At between
1000 mm and 800 mm we will have to start reducing the volume
of water we take from the wells. At present, the daily bore
water level drops about 100 mm a day, so towards the end of
this week I expect we will have to reduce what we take from
the bores.”
“When we reduce what we take from the
bores, we need a corresponding reduction in peak demand. If
there isn’t, the water storage tanks will empty and for a
short period Renwick will have no water.
“We are currently extracting 55 litres per second (l/s). Peak demand in the evening is getting up to 63 l/s, for up to four hours. We manage this demand by sourcing water from the bores and the storage tanks.
“If people can reduce
their water use now, we can avoid water restrictions
later.
“Over the past two years, Renwick residents have
done a great job in voluntarily reducing their irrigation
water use. We need people to continue to restrict their
water use.”

A
new reservoir with larger storage capacity will be built in
Renwick, with completion planned for July 2020. The new
reservoir will help alleviate summer demand pressure on the
Renwick aquifer.
