New Speed Sign has “Huge Positive Impact”

A new speed sign has been installed at the southern end of Amberley. The sign is intended to target excessive speeds and provide a safer environment for a community hosting a busy state highway.
The additional sign arrives following a speed testing project run by the Hurunui Youth Council (HYC) in conjunction with police. During this project the HYC recorded speeds through Amberley in excess of what is legal and safe. Their data provided strong support for the instillation.
Manager of Infrastructure and Assets at the council David Edge says the arrival of the new sign was achieved through the efforts of many. Including a huge financial contribution from the Amberley Lions to get this worthwhile project underway.
“This project involved an enormous amount of coordination with suppliers and NZTA and it has already had a huge positive impact for speed reduction through Amberley.”
“With the success of the speed indication sign at the north end of Amberley, the lions approached HDC officers for an opportunity to sponsor another sign at the southern end of Amberley.”
President of the Amberley Lions, James Drewery explains the Lions club hosted and ran a boxing tournament that helped raise $8500 for the sign.
“Thanks to the support of council and the proceeds of the boxing tournament, the project is now up and running”.
Hurunui Road Safety Chair Cr Julia McLean says “local organisations looking to improve community well-being should be applauded, as small communities like ours depend on them to get important projects like this off the ground”.
