FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Cleaning up the Bays
If you love Wellington, its waters, and getting out and about around the capital’s coastlines, Sport Wellington could
use your help!
On Wednesday 23 January, Sport Wellington staff, sponsors and volunteers will spend the afternoon cleaning up the
shoreline along Shelley Bay Road and Massey Road. Their efforts are in preparation for the 2019 Brendan Foot Supersite
Round the Bays fun run/walk on Sunday 17 February.
Alongside community health and wellbeing, caring for the environment is close to Sport Wellington’s heart. “Cleaning up
the beaches is our way of supporting the environment and looking after our coastline,” says John Grieve, Event Director,
Sport Wellington. “Our beach clean-up last year cleared a lot of rubbish, we definitely made a difference.”
Anyone who would like to make a difference by getting involved for the afternoon or on event day should contact Kathleen
at rtbvolunteers@sportwellington.org.nz
The clean-up will start with a briefing at 1.30pm and all helpers will be treated to afternoon tea, compliments of the
Chocolate Fish Café, as a thank you for their efforts.
Since its inception in 1979 with just under 4,000 participants, Round the Bays has grown from strength to strength over
the last 40 years. 2018 saw over 14,300 registered participants take part in running or walking around Wellington’s
scenic waterfront.
Starting at Frank Kitts Park and ending at Kilbirnie Park, participants can take part in the Fiji Airlines 6.5km fun
run/walk, Active Families 6.5km (where children 12 and under can ride their scooter), More FM 6.5km Buggy Walk,
Bluebridge 10km or the NZCT Half Marathon – with the half marathon runners making their way out to a turn-around point
at Scorching Bay.
Sport Wellington prides itself on delivering an event that has reduced barriers ensuring a wide range of the community
is able to participate. Having a low entry fee, a range of distances, and providing a festival atmosphere at Frank Kitts
Park and Kilbirnie Park, Brendan Foot Supersite Round the Bays encourages people to take part in active recreation and
celebrates their achievements.
Registrations are still open for the event online at www.wellingtonroundthebays.co.nz Standard pricing ends midnight 31 January, changing to the ‘late prices’ after this date.
