A fire inside Blenheim’s Waste Sorting Centre was attended to by Fire and Emergency NZ this morning, and is under control.
The fire was discovered in the centre, affecting general waste, wood and cardboard. Hazardous waste was not affected. A clean up is underway.
Solid Waste Manager Alec McNeil says it’s likely the sorting centre will be closed until at least tomorrow, Tuesday 15 January.
“The upper level outside bins will be closed today. Customers should delay bringing in waste for sorting. The recycling service is open as normal.”
Information on the cause of the fire will be made available once an investigation is complete. At this stage, it is not thought to be suspicious.
