Rosedale Road under Northern Motorway to be lowered

Rosedale Road under Northern Motorway to be lowered in January

Drivers are encouraged to plan their journeys around the North Shore suburb of Rosedale in early January because of construction work under the Northern Motorway.

Crews will be lowering a section of Rosedale Road under the motorway by 1.5m as part of the Northern Corridor Improvements project

The work will take place from 8pm Wednesday, 2 January to 5am Monday, 14 January 2019.

NZ Transport Agency Senior Manager Project Delivery Chris Hunt says the work is planned for the summer holiday period when there is significantly less traffic in the area and the weather more favourable for it to be completed in the shortest possible time.

Local shops and businesses on Rosedale Road will remain open as usual.

“We know that it’s a busy time for some retailers, so we’re making sure that our traffic management crews are on hand to assist people with moving around the area. We’re advising people to plan their journeys and allow extra time.”

A short section of Rosedale Road from the Tawa Drive roundabout to the motorway bridge will be closed to traffic, but there will be detours to access the rest of Rosedale Road. People can also access the outlet stores on Triton and Apollo Drive as normal.

The work involves lowering the road by breaking the existing layer and rebuilding the surface. Trucks and vehicles will be moving around the work area and also entering the Rosedale Landfill.

The new road will enable extra headroom for trucks and double decker buses. It is the first stage of work to replace the SH1 bridge.

The new, lowered road will also be widened to allow for four lanes in the future. It will provide better choices for travel and improve access to the proposed Rosedale Busway Station.

“We’re aiming to complete the work well before the majority of businesses start work again in mid January and before summer events start taking place around Albany,” says Mr Hunt.

The Northern Corridor Improvements project will provide a much needed transport upgrade for the Albany and North Shore community, with a new bus station and shared paths for walking and cycling. It includes a new motorway connection between SH1 and SH18 and will open up access to the Western Ring Route and travel to the airport.
