Council takes ownership of Ashhurst Pool
The Ashhurst School and Community Pool will re-open in the New Year, after being closed for the past 12 months. Palmerston North City Council negotiated with the Ministry of Education to take over ownership and management of the pool.
The pool facility will be managed and operated on behalf of Council by CLM, the same organisation managing the Lido and Freberg Pool facilities.
Ashhurst School will have exclusive use between 10am to 1pm, Monday to Thursday. Outside of these times the pool will be available for the community.
“We’re delighted to have reached an agreement with the Ministry of Education that allows the Ashhurst community to have their community pool operating again,” says PNCC Chief Infrastructure Officer Tom Williams.”
Council will initially be attending to urgent works to get the pool to an operational standard.
“We also have a number of improvement works scheduled for the next few years to bring it up to the same quality as our other facilities.”
Once opened, the pool will offer a range of services consistent with Council’s other pools, including a variety of classes, general use and swim school.
Mayor Grant Smith says he is thrilled the Ashhurst community will soon have their much-loved facility available again for public use.
The opening date for the pool will be announced in the New Year. To enable the operation of the pool, Council has a long-term lease of Ministry’s land.
