Hamilton Mayor Andrew King says the creation of a 56.7 hectare industrial site south of the city in Hautapu is a further reminder of the strength of the region’s economic development.

Waipa District Council today announced it has approved a private plan change in Hautapu, on the northern outskirts of Cambridge, which will become the new industrial zone.

The new zone will allow Hamilton-based Architectural Profiles Ltd (APL) to move its operation from Te Rapa, providing room for expansion and creating more jobs.

“APL is a fantastic Hamilton success story, and that success is providing a further boost to the wider Hamilton region with their expansion,” Mayor Andrew King says.

“Today’s decision isn’t a surprise – we have been working closely with APL to retain them within Hamilton but they have made the decision that’s right for their business. Hamilton is the hub of a Waikato region which will be home to half a million people in a few decades. Business wants to be here, or near here,” Mayor King says.

“That desire to be part of the Hamilton and central Waikato story means demand for industrial land in Hamilton is very high. For some large industrial development we simply don’t have the land available. I am having those discussions with major companies almost every week.

“I have consistently said we need to look at our boundaries to ensure we don’t lose opportunities to support our region’s economic growth and that’s a conversation I will keep having,” Mayor King says.

“In this case we have retained the economic benefit of APL in the central Waikato, and the new industrial zone in Waipa will provide opportunities for businesses and service industries in Hamilton and the wider region. I congratulate APL on their success and for being a big part of our regional growth story.”
