For Immediate Release
Jaunty steps along the dedicated footpath on Oriental Parade signal a new way forward for walking in Wellington. Along with the new cycleway opening this morning, a lot of hard work by residents and many groups has paid off.
"We are thrilled that this special part of Wellington has now got a safer and more pleasant walk to the beach for the thousands who pass here every day," Living Streets Tumuaki Tuarua Ellen Blake says. "This will encourage more people to get out for a walk, and we congratulate Wellington City Council on making this happen. We look forward to this good work continuing along the rest of the Parade soon."
This busy pedestrian space has cried out for a return of a dedicated footpath, and the numbers concur - 94,440 pedestrian trips have been counted on this path in November alone. From today pedestrians will have a dedicated footpath, and cyclists will have a separate cycleway to use along part of Oriental Parade.
