Summer Upon us but Still Some Wet Weather this Week

We are firmly in summer, with the countdown to Kirihimete (Xmas) underway. With MetService forecasting some showers in the week ahead, it might be a good opportunity to get onto the presents!

Yes, raumati (summer) is upon us. Unfortunately, the seasons transcend the calendar months and we are still stuck with some wet weather for now. Give it some time though, drier weather will eventually grace our wonderful land – good things come to those who wait!

While the week starts of well, a low-pressure system to the west of us brings humid air and the wet weather. “Showers along with a period of rain are expected at times for much of the country”, says MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes.

“Some of these showers are showing potential to be heavy or thundery inland,” McInnes says, “but this is gazing far into the future, so it’s important to stay up to date with our latest weather information.”

Cooler temperatures are expected mid-week, a “result of the wetter and cloudier weather” explains McInnes. The reassurance comes from McInnes, “given it’s December, cooler is a relative term, so no need to be grabbing your woollen jacket!”

As the week draws to a close, high pressure returns, helping to fine things up. Showers are set to linger but mainly inland. With the sun showing its glow, the timely reminder from McInnes: “slip, slop slap and stay sun smart!”
