New movie streaming service launched by library

New movie streaming service launched by library

Timaru District Libraries is the first public library in New Zealand to offer a new, free streaming movie service.

The new service, Kanopy, allows every library user to stream eight movies a month off the site for free. All people need to do is they need to register is the library number and their PIN.

Libraries Manager, Adele Hewlett, said that the library was always looking for innovative new ways that it can bring content straight to people.

“Kanopy is an amazing service that offers something quite unique to people, it has a catalogue of independent, classic and world cinema and documentaries that aren’t usually available on current streaming services in New Zealand.

“It can be accessed at any time on people’s computers, android and iPhones and it’s even compatible with streaming devices such as Chromecast, Apple TV and Roku.

“As a library the collection of physical items we have available to Timaru District residents is incredibly important, but our investments in resources like Press Reader, Borrow Box and Kanopy are vital to ensure we remain a relevant part of this digital world.”

Kanopy has a library of more than 30,000 items available to stream and includes such kiwi classics as Utu Redux and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

It joins our other online services such as PressReader, which offers free access to thousands of newspapers and magazines, and Wheelers ePlatform and BorrowBox, which have free audio and e-books that you can borrow from home.

“We’re really excited about the launch of this new service as it brings a major new resource to Timaru,” said Adele.

“Anyone who needs help setting up their account can drop into the library at any time and we can help them get going.”
