Fostering cultural understanding among Dunedin Public Libraries’ staff and helping weave connections between staff and
the community has earned Moana Wesley special recognition.
Ms Wesley, of Dunedin, today received the Dunedin Public Libraries Citation for 2018. This was awarded in recognition of
her longstanding role as tutor of the Dunedin City Council Waiata Group.
The citation recognises the valuable contribution of writers, artists, researchers, sponsors and others to the
libraries. It is awarded to a local resident who has made a long and outstanding contribution to the libraries’
collections, services or programmes.
Library Services Manager Bernie Hawke says, “Moana has led the waiata group since its inception. The group included
primarily Dunedin Public Libraries staff initially, but now includes a broad cross section of people from the DCC. Moana
has provided inspirational leadership to the group and has developed a diverse kete of waiata, graciously and generously
sharing her wisdom and her world.
“Through song she has taught us there are many voices and many stories.”
DCC Community and Culture Committee Chair Cr Aaron Hawkins says the waiata group has played a significant part in many
DCC events and celebrations in the community.
“I congratulate Moana on this well-deserved award and thank her for her commitment and vision. The waiata group is part
of the heart of this organisation and we value it highly.”
Cr Hawkins formally awarded the citation today during the libraries’ annual Christmas morning tea to thank volunteers
and others who have helped the libraries during the year.
