Blind Citizens NZ Celebrates

Blind Citizens NZ Celebrates International Day of Disabled Persons and our Accessibility Social Media Campaign

Today, 3 December, is International Day of Disabled Persons! Blind Citizens NZ joins with everyone in celebrating the opportunities this brings to celebrate the many accomplishments of disabled people, and to reflect on our organisational work as we strive to remove the barriers and challenges many of us face on a daily basis.

As we celebrate this year’s theme “Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality”, Blind Citizens NZ promotes our own contributions towards creating a fully inclusive society. A society where blind, deafblind and vision impaired people can lead rich, full and independent lives with confidence and dignity.

Explaining the approach towards the campaign, National President Jonathan Godfrey said, “Our aim is to educate the general public about some of the key issues faced by the blind community, and what they can do about it.

“To bring our ideas to life, we have exaggerated what it is like for someone like me, to negotiate everyday obstacles. We created a fun, animated character who stumbles across somebody’s rubbish on the sidewalk, and then has to perform a series of ridiculous over-the-top actions to simply get past.”
