Rain has fallen everywhere across the country during the past week, increasing the soil moisture levels in drier areas,
while bringing too much rain for some, especially around Dunedin. It also brought problems for many events this weekend,
resulting in a few event postponements and cancellations. Some notable rainfall totals in the past 24 hours were around
60 to 70mm over the Kaimai and Coromandel ranges, and 40 to 60mm around coastal Bay of Plenty.
Unfortunately, MetService has more rain in the forecast for the working week ahead, as a complex trough of low pressure
stretches from the Tasman Sea across much of Aotearoa, maintaining moist, humid conditions over central and northern
parts of the country.
“There are currently severe weather warnings in place for heavy rain over Wairarapa and Marlborough, extending well into
Monday, and we are watching remaining eastern parts of the South Island closely” commented MetService forecaster Cameron
Coutts.
However, western areas of the South Island and southwest of the North Island escape with generally fine weather.
“Also looking warm for the sheltered West Coast of the South Island, with temperatures there heading into the twenties
right through the week” says Coutts.
