Rainfall and rivers update #9
North Otago rivers on the rise
River flows across the region are generally receding, including the Taieri, Manuherikia and Clutha rivers. Some rivers
around Dunedin and further north will rise again, due to the forecast rain.
North Otago rivers have started rising. Rainfall combined with snowmelt and saturated ground may see them reach the high
flows that occurred earlier this week.
The Silver Stream on the Taieri floodplain, and the Water of Leith and Lindsay Creek in Dunedin are also expected to
rise but not to the levels of earlier this week. Flows will not reach the level at which the Gordon Road spillway
(Silver Stream) operates.
Groundwater levels in South Dunedin are also being monitored, with Otago Regional Council (ORC) staff liaising with
Dunedin City Council.
The Clutha and Taieri rivers remain in flood but are continuing to recede. The further rainfall forecast for Otago is
not expected to cause them to rise.
ORC staff are monitoring the 12 Clutha and Taieri drainage scheme pump stations. All stations are operating and are
helping to slowly drain floodwater.
Otago Regional Council staff will continue to monitor river flows and flood schemes closely, with flood managers and
field staff rostered 24/7.
