Floodwaters continue to recede
Dunedin (Wednesday, 21 November 2018) – Floodwaters throughout Dunedin continued to slowly recede today following yesterday’s
heavy rain.
Light rain fell throughout the city this afternoon, but no new flood-related issues have emerged.
Road access to the small settlement of Henley, south of Dunedin, remains cut off due to flooding. Most residents decided
to stay put and there are currently no welfare concerns.
DCC staff and contractors continue to monitor the situation and anyone with urgent flood-related issues can contact the
DCC on 03 477 4000, or call 111 in an emergency.
Water and wastewater
DCC staff and contractors have today been assisting with clean up, particularly in Middlemarch. Clean up efforts will
continue in the township over the next couple of days.
Middlemarch residents continue to be advised not to drink water from private bores as it could be contaminated. Water is
available from a tanker beside the Strath-Taieri Community Centre. People should bring clean containers to fill.
Taieri residents are also being advised not to drink water from private bores as it may be contaminated.
Water from all DCC supplies is safe to drink.
A burst on the watermain supplying the Coast Road and Evansdale areas has now been repaired. Residents’ tanks may take
some time to refill, so fresh drinking water remains available from a tanker at the junction of SH1 and Coast Road,
outside the old hotel/service station. Please bring clean containers to fill.
People should continue to stay out of all waterways and should not collect shellfish for 48 hours.
Road network
Some roads remain closed, mostly rural roads in the Strath-Taieri and Taieri areas. For road closures and conditions, go
to www.dunedin.govt.nz/road-conditions. State highway closures are on the NZ Transport Agency website at www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/.
Motorists should continue to take extreme care. With saturated ground conditions, further slips, debris and fallen trees
on roads are still possible, and may not always been signposted.
Sandbags
People who picked up sandbags yesterday from the three sites in Dunedin and Mosgiel (Memorial Park car park, Hotel
Taieri, and the Dunedin Ice Stadium) are asked to return these to one of the sites by 12pm, Thursday, 22 November. After
this time, we will arrange for contractors to pick up excess sandbags. For people who asked for sandbags to be delivered
to their homes, we will arrange contractors to pick these up later today or tomorrow morning.
Freedom camping
The Warrington Domain will remain closed until further notice.
