National Geographic Exhibition Coming to Pātea
For the first time in New Zealand the National Geographic exhibition Rarely Seen: Photographs of the Extraordinary is coming to Aotea Utanganui Museum of South Taranaki in Pātea.
Rarely Seen: Photographs of the Extraordinary, has been shot by some of the world’s finest photographers and features striking images of places, events, natural
phenomena, and man-made heirlooms seldom seen by human eyes. It’s all here: 30,000-year-old cave art sealed from the
public; animals that are among the last of their species on Earth; volcanic lightning; giant crystals that have grown to
more than 50 tons; and the engraving inside Abraham Lincoln’s pocket watch.
In the exhibition of visual wonders, National Geographic reveals a world very few have the chance to see for themselves.
From the Peruvian Andes to the deepest caves of Papua New Guinea, this exhibition captures once-in-a-lifetime moments,
natural wonders, and rarely seen objects from across the globe. “This collection from the stables of the world’s leading
geography imaging organisation is truly unseen in many ways”, says Kaitiaki Pukapuka-a-Rohe/District Archivist Cameron
S. Curd. “They have managed to successfully curate this fantastically-rich and diverse range of images and squeezed them
into this exhibition” … “and New Zealand audiences will have the opportunity to share in this special moment to
celebrate heritage and culture from right across the globe”.
Rarely Seen: Photographs of the Extraordinary premieres in Aotearoa New Zealand from 1 March – 31 August 2019 at Aotea Utanganui Museum of South Taranaki, 127 Egmont
