Waikato businesses and locals wanting to support victims of domestic violence now have quick and easy options for
helping out this Christmas.
Waikato Women’s Refuge Te Whakaruruhau always relies on community donations to help provide Christmas gifts for the
women and families it helps. This year the refuge wants to make it easier for those looking to support victims.
Organisations and locals can now pay for donation packages to help support the women and children in the Waikato Women’s
Refuge. Donation packages cover Christmas presents for children, Christmas family meal parcels and homeware packs for
those moving into new homes.
“We know there is support in the community for these women and children. We also know it’s a busy and demanding time of
year for people and organisations, so we have created those packages to help make it easier to support these families in
need,” says CEO Ruahine (Roni) Albert QSM.
Businesses and individuals can donate money which will buy Christmas gifts or Christmas mal packages for women and
children in the refuge. The donation options include:
• $20 which will pay for age-appropriate children’s gifts
• $130 which will pay for a family Christmas meal pack
• $450 for a homeware starter pack for women and children moving into new accommodation
“Christmas is a very difficult time for the parents at the Waikato Women’s Refuge and many of the children at the
Waikato Women’s Refuge can feel left out. These gifts will help them feel valued and will help create safe home
environments for the families,” Albert says.
The Waikato Women’s Refuge services help an estimated 100 women and children every week including six safe houses
located throughout the Waikato.
“We are extremely thankful for support from the community during this busy time of year. These donations make it
possible to help victims live a life free from domestic violence.”
Albert says the homeware starter packs, designed to help women and children moving on from safehouses into their own
accommodation, will provide items such as sheets, towels, kitchen cutlery and crockery etc. She hopes it will become a
year-round option for those wishing to donate and help the refuge and affected families.
