Drivers are being reminded to watch their following distances on the Northern Motorway in Christchurch.
Over the past few weeks North Canterbury Police have issued 20 infringement notices to drivers who are following too
closely.
The minimum legal following distance is 34 meters for 81 Kmph or more and 36 meters for 91 Kmph or more.
Highway Patrol Sergeant John Hamilton says he is seeing far too many tailgaters on North Canterbury roads.
“Following too closely gives drivers less time to react in an emergency, a few metres could be the difference between
getting to where you are going safely and serious injury or death on our roads.”
“Police can’t control the actions of every driver 24/7, we can’t be beside you telling you to slow down, to increase
your following distance or to put your seatbelt.
“We need everyone to take responsibility for the safety of our motorways.”
Anyone who sees dangerous driving is urged to call 111 immediately, or if you witness inconsiderate behaviour *555.
