" Police remind motorcyclists to check their gear"
As the summer months approach and more motorcyclists are hitting the road, Bay of Plenty Police are asking riders to think safety first.
Last night at around 10:50pm Police responded to a motorcycle crash at the intersection of State Highway One and Lake Terrace, Taupo.
The driver of the motorcycle is now in Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.
“This is a devastating outcome for the motorcyclist and his loved ones,” says Senior Sergeant Fane Troy, Taupo Area Road Policing Manager.
The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Serious Crash Unit.
Senior Sergeant Troy says the really concerning factor for Police attending the crash was that the injured rider was not wearing the correct helmet.
“This rider was trying to get it right.
He was wearing good quality, sturdy bike gear but unfortunately his helmet was not a safety approved crash helmet.
“The helmet is compulsory for a reason, it is the most important piece of safety equipment for anyone getting on a motorbike.
“Check that your helmet is the right size – it should fit snugly on your head with minimum use of pads.
If your helmet gets damaged, replace it with a new one,” says Senior Sergeant Troy.
“We don’t want motorcyclists putting themselves at risk on our roads because they don’t have the right equipment, so make sure you check your gear and tell your friends too.
Your helmet must meet an approved standard and be securely fastened.
More information for riders can be found at rideforever.co.nz or on the NZTA website.
