The Sky Tower will be the first global landmark to light up for World Heart Day and the Heart Foundation, in a move to
raise awareness for New Zealand’s single biggest killer, heart disease.
On Saturday 29 September, the top the Sky Tower will illuminate red and pulse to mimic a heartbeat, acknowledging the
6000 Kiwi lives lost each year to heart disease.
In its 50th year, the Heart Foundation is encouraging Kiwis to make a commitment to their own individual heart health as
more than 186,000 people in New Zealand are currently living with heart disease. Other famous landmarks around the world
including New York’s Times Square, Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt and Table Mountain and Cape Wheel in South Africa will
also light, united in raising awareness of the impact of heart disease.
The Sky Tower is the Southern Hemisphere’s tallest man-made structure based in the heart of Auckland CBD, and is one of
New Zealand’s most recognisable landmarks.
SKYCITY lights the Sky Tower for charities or community initiatives that we support financially, to mark national
holidays, milestones or other celebrations or events, or as a symbol of respect or solidarity.
The lighting of the Sky Tower is best viewed, photographed or filmed 30 minutes after sunset.
