River levels continue to be monitored

MEDIA RELEASE - RAIN EVENT September 2018 #1
Wednesday 5 September, 2018
Horizons Regional Council river management staff will be keeping a close eye on river levels in the Manawatū Catchment, which includes the Pohangina and Oroua Rivers, over the next two days. This includes the Manawatū River where level predictions signal a possible Moutoa floodgate operation late Friday afternoon.
Horizons group manager river management Ramon Strong says the rain occurring along the east coast and over the Ruahine Ranges is forecast to potentially move further south into our region.
“We’re expecting slow and steady rain which, if the forecasts are correct, will impact the Upper Manawatū, Pohangina and Oroua sub-catchments. However it’s a fairly complex weather system so the next 48 hours will be crucial in determining whether the Moutoa flood gates will need to operate.
“River levels are high at the gates, however we want to reassure the local community we are monitoring the situation closely. We will be in contact with affected landowners prior to any floodgate operation.
“There are also no concerns for the Whanganui River, however we will keep an eye on all river systems as the weather unfolds to ensure we are prepared to respond as necessary,” says Mr Strong.
Members of the public are advised to take care while driving and check the NZ Transport Agency’s website, https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/traffic/regions/8 for information on state highway conditions.
