New World supermarkets set for synchronised sausage sizzle
New World supermarkets set for 2nd synchronised sausage sizzle for Starship
Staff at nearly 140 New World stores are priming their barbecues for one of the largest synchronised cook-ups in the country: New World’s annual Largest Sausage Sizzle for Starship.
On Saturday, 1 September, New World stores will be serving up sausages in exchange for a gold coin, with all proceeds going to the Starship Foundation, which raises funds for Starship Child Health.
It will be the second time the supermarket chain has held a nationwide sausage sizzle in the name of the Foundation, which it has supported as an official Five Star Sponsor since 2014.
Just over $44,000 was raised last year – or $340 per store, on average – though some towns seemed especially partial to the Kiwi delicacy, with New World Stratford donating $1015, New World Taumarunui $869, and New World Oamaru $688.
Steve Anderson, Managing Director, Foodstuffs New Zealand Ltd, says after the success of last year’s cook-up it was an easy decision to do it again – this year and into the foreseeable future.
“Our stores are gathering-points for the communities they serve, including children and teenagers,” says Anderson. “If they can collectively raise tens of thousands of dollars in a single day for a hospital that cares for thousands of young Kiwis from around the country every year, that’s a smashing effort for a stellar cause.”
“This year we have additional support in the form of bread from Nature’s Fresh, tomato sauce from Heinz-Wattie’s, and paper towels from Handee. To get those suppliers on board is fantastic.”
Mr Anderson says as well as the annual sausage sizzle, Foodstuffs will continue to deliver boxes of fresh fruit to Starship twice a week for every family kitchen – totalling more than 800 per year.
“Backing the Starship Foundation aligns with New World’s mission to make New Zealand a happier place, because healthier children make for happier communities,” Anderson concludes.
