Statistics show Marlborough economy healthy

Marlborough’s economy is still doing better than the national economy.

The latest quarterly economic monitor report from Infometrics shows the Marlborough economy continues to be healthy. Details are here:https://ecoprofile.infometrics.co.nz/Marlborough%2bRegion/QuarterlyEconomicMonitor

The report, looking at the June 2018 quarter, says Marlborough’s economy continued to expand during the early stages of winter. The provisional estimate of GDP showed growth of 3.5 per cent over the year to June, well above the 2.7 per cent estimate of GDP growth nationally.

It pointed to strong exports and a strong labour market with spending growing and the average number of people receiving Jobseeker Support down.

“Good employment prospects have encouraged both international and regional migration to Marlborough,” the report says.

It estimates Marlborough gained 121 international migrants and 207 domestic migrants in the year to June 2018.

Tourism spending, traffic flows, and residential building consents were also up, higher than the national figures.

Marlborough Mayor John Leggett says the report shows how well the region is doing, and particularly how it has bounced back from the Kaikōura earthquake.

“The indicators are good, and looking to the future, we expect this will continue for some time. Marlborough is a great place to visit, work and live.”
