The Dome has landed
A unique venue resembling something from a science fiction movie has popped up in the Hastings CBD this week and will host a number of events in coming days.
The 20m diameter Geodome was being constructed this week on Albert Square, initially installed as the venue for the highly anticipated Hastings City Centre Celebration Awards this Friday night.
The novel structure, however, captured the imagination of several Hastings businesses, groups and the Hastings District Council, who decided to extend the fun and keep the dome in town for a few more days to stage some more events.
Youth organisation Zeal Hawke’s Bay jumped on board, and on Saturday night will stage “Under the Dome”, featuring some of Hawke’s Bay’s finest young musical talent.
Aimed at people aged between 13 and 18, a number of youth bands will rock the dome with their homegrown stylings.
Young music fans have been advised to get in fast because this event is likely to be a sell-out – lineup to be announced!
On Sunday, Hastings’ Maori musical talent will be celebrated with a preview concert for Maori Music Month, which is held in September.
Finally, next Monday, some of the acts from Saturday night’s Zeal concert will return to showcase their sounds on a smaller scale over lunchtime to give the wider public a sample of their musical offerings.
Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst checked out the dome while it was under construction this week and said it was great that its time in the city centre had been extended.
“As a council we are always looking for ways to bring Hastings alive and this is a fantastic opportunity to do just that.
“This is a hugely innovative and exciting venue that will draw our community into the city centre. It’s also fantastic to have a youth music event back in the CBD, which used to be held in the Hawke’s Bay Opera House facility until it was closed.
“Not only will our local businesses get the chance to celebrate their achievements in The Dome, but the wider community will also be able to enjoy this unique space.”
