Pick & Mix Celebrates 10 Years with a Huge Kids Takeover
Auckland Live Pick & Mix are putting on a massive 10th birthday celebration on August 18 & 19where the kids are in charge for once!
To celebrate a decade of innovative and interactive arts experiences for kids, Auckland Live is handing the reins over
to the next generation – from ushering the audience into the theatres, operating the lights and sound, MC-ing the
events, and of course acting on stage.
For the first time in Auckland Live history, a production crew of 39 youngsters will cut their teeth in the performing
arts industry, with professional adult buddies to show them the ropes. The sound department gains 5 new techs, while 3
kids take control over the lighting. Over 1,400 punters in the sold-out audience across the two sessions will be kept
entertained by 6 young hosts making their debut as MCs, and they will be interviewed by a media posse of future
journalists. The on-stage action is also kid-driven with 22 young actors from National Youth Theatre Company presenting
their favourite scenes from Peter Pan, CATS and some musical theatre classics.
Every year, Auckland Live develops an eclectic programme to delight kids and their adults withfree performances and
hands-on workshops across Auckland, joining forces with some of the country’s most prestigious arts companies and
exciting new innovators. The 2018 programme has been a hit with families, with the entire season booked out in advance,
proving there is certainly demand for accessible arts experiences for young creatives.
Janelle Bish, who spearheads programming for families and young people at Auckland Live, sees Pick & Mix as a vital element of the organisation’s goal of getting kids involved in a practical way.
“Auckland Live is driven by, enabling opportunities for very young people to engage with the arts, so that they might
find their tribe and develop a lifelong journey with the performing arts. We know that direct participation is the best
way for young people to ignite their own passion for it, and to develop their skills. This year we are excited to deepen
that engagement by also giving them free access to the venues that house the programme, so that they can explore every
facet of the mechanics of live performance.”
