The Amberley Library has benefited from a generous gesture, with the unveiling of an innovative new artwork that has
been gifted to the library.
Renowned local artist Wayne Youle has worked his magic, creating an eye-catching installation featuring 25 double-sided
glass screens.
The etched screen-wall features a mix of well-known literature quotes, animated TV and movie characters and an abundance
of symbols and instruments reflecting the history of Aotearoa.
District Libraries Manager Justine Lester says the Amberley Library is incredibly lucky to benefit from such a wonderful
piece, created by an artist whose work is held in such high regard and features in national museums and public
galleries.
“Wayne is a well-known and highly respected artist and we are extremely grateful to him for allowing us to showcase his
work. I am looking forward to library users experiencing the piece and discovering its hidden meanings.”
Wayne donated his time to the project and the materials used to create the artwork have been funded by a Creative
Communities Grant and by the Friends of the Hurunui District Libraries.
The artwork is an important example of where the Creative Communities Grants, allocated by the council each year, have
been able to provide diverse opportunities for the community to access and participate in the arts.
Wayne Youle says his installation will resonate with those who visit the library as the silhouettes depicted will be
relatable, whether it be through memories of their childhood or current day symbols.
“The different panels will take those viewing them on a journey, with the silhouettes taking a face-value identity away
and leaving shapes that allow a discovery of meaning.”
“I hope this piece takes children and adults alike on a journey of creativity and discovery,” says Wayne.
