“Grab It with Both Hands” - Opportunity to Shape the Future of Takapuna

Takapuna Beach Business Association CEO, Terence Harpur says the opportunity to shape the future of Takapuna is both unique and vital to both members, residents and the wider Auckland community and urges everyone to “grab it with both hands and move forward to realise the potential of Takapuna.”

Public feedback and voting on the various three options presented by Auckland Council’s led Panuku Development Auckland closes on Friday 10th August and with it the opportunity to engage in what Harpur calls a “significant and exciting chance to be actively involved in the future direction of Takapuna, an area that has remained largely unchanged for decades and now has the opportunity and resource to be meet the growing needs and demands of a new Auckland.”

Harpur describes Takapuna as the "jewel in the crown" of urban Auckland and is uniquely positioned in that it offers the best of all worlds as being arguably the most desirable place to work, live, play and stay. With an enviable mix of entertainment, commercial, and residential within proximity to one of the region's best beaches, Takapuna is perfectly poised to realise its potential as a premier location for retailers, residents and visitors.

Following on from smaller scale developments of the beachfront dining precinct and Hurstmere Green into more user-friendly spaces has offered up a taste of what could be.

The next major step in tomorrow's Takapuna is the crucial voting around Panuku Development Auckland's proposed plan to redevelop the current carpark at 40 Anzac Street. This prime space has languished as a carpark for decades in what Harpur describes as "hardly being the centre stage deserving of a place like Takapuna." The new development proposes a definitive town square, together with the retention of Potters Park and a great use of the space to advance both retail and residential requirements.

Harpur says it is "important that the public and other interested parties vote with the full picture in frame as opposed to portions of it." This includes taking into consideration the redevelopment of the current Gasometer site in Northcroft Street which will be developed in tandem with the 40 Anzac Street development to deliver more parking by way of a state-of-the-art purpose-built parking facility that will be linked through the centre of Takapuna to the beach.

Harpur acknowledges that while parking remains front of mind for many, the 40 Anzac Street proposal does contain consideration for off street parking in and around the current site as well as a significantly upweighted parking solution for Takapuna in the redevelopment of the Gasomoter site. Harpur points out that the retention of some car parking at or around 40 Anzac Street forms part of the unitary plan as well as being strongly desirous to members with a newly developed state-of-the-art facility providing even easier parking than visitors to Takapuna currently enjoy.

Harpur urges “everyone and anyone” who loves Takapuna to get on board and vote. A vote for either option 1 or 2 will be a vote for a progressive future for Takapuna as well as offering the opportunity to share some detail around your thoughts with our city planners.
