Renotification of WCO for Ngaruroro, Clive Rivers

MEDIA RELEASE

WEDNESDAY, JULY 25, 2018

Renotification of Water Conservation Order for the Ngaruroro and Clive Rivers

The Water Conservation Order (WCO) for the Ngaruroro and Clive Rivers in Hawke’s Bay has been renotified, which means additional submissions on the application can be made.

Stephanie Frame, Nationally Significant Proposals Application Manager says “Recent evidence has identified that wider groundwater connections to the surface water in the rivers exist. Because this was not known when the application was first notified, the application for the WCO may now be of interest to additional parties.”
Anyone may make a submission on this application. Existing submitters do not need to re-submit but may do so if they wish to provide additional information.

What is a WCO?
Water Conservation Orders recognise the outstanding amenity or intrinsic values of a body of water and can be applied over rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, wetlands or aquifers and over freshwater or geothermal water. Rules for WCOs are set out in the Resource Management Act (1991). There are currently 15 WCO’s in force in New Zealand.

The New Zealand Fish and Game Council, the Hawke’s Bay Fish and Game Council, Operation Patiki Ngāti Hori ki Kohupatiki, Whitewater New Zealand, Jet Boating New Zealand, and the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand have jointly applied to the Minister for the Environment for the order.
