Mini Games Competitors Take to the Slopes
at Happy Valley
MT RUAPEHU 19 JULY 2018: The Whakapapa Mini Games is the first major event of Whakapapa’s 2018 season and the turnout was huge in Happy Valley
yesterday with more than 140 competitors taking to the slopes.
Mt Ruapehu Marketing Manager Matt McIvor says the event was all about having fun and provides a safe and welcoming
platform for kids who’ve never competed before to give it a go.
“It was the largest turnout to this event in a long time. It was great to see kids who only had a couple of days skiing
or riding under their belt giving the course a go. That’s what the event is all about, so well done to all competitors.
“We’re really stoked with our events and operational teams who made it such an awesome day for the kids and the sponsors
who supported it.”
The event was free for kids aged 5 – 12yrs of all abilities. Categories were 5-8yrs and 9 – 12yrs, skiers and
snowboarders.
Sponsors Mt Ruapehu & HEAD offered spot prizes to the best tricks on the jump at the end of the race course and fastest times of the day.
HEAD also gave away a backpack and pair of skis to the lucky winners of their activation draw.
Whakapapa’s mascot ‘Skiwi’ joined in the fun handing out stickers and high-fives to all kids who entered the
competition.
"The course was very unique with a mix of race gates and a jump to finish," Matt says. "The weather was a mix of
sunshine and snow but didn’t stop the kids getting amongst it, it was great to see so many youngsters out on the slopes
having a blast."
